 The gentlemen of the city would have seats in the boxes above the theater floor. There is a dumbwaiter from the bar to the balcony so the "ladies" could serve the gentlemen as they watched the show.
 In the basement of the Birdcage Theater there was gambling and other activities. Legend has it that some faro games were in continuous operation day-and-night for months on end. Miners would find some silver, bring it to the Birdcage, and promptly lose it.
 Also in the basement of the Birdcage Theater were a number of bedrooms used by the "ladies" of the theater.
